To Risk Management:
I am writing to raise concerns regarding my recent colonoscopy and the care surrounding an airway-related complication during or after the procedure.
I understand complications can happen. My concern is not that an event occurred, but that the communication, recovery management, and discharge process did not seem appropriately tailored to what happened.
After the procedure, it was clear there had been an airway issue, but the explanations provided were very high level and only came when we asked direct questions. Even then, the responses felt incomplete. When I asked directly whether I had aspirated, I was told no because my numbers would have been “in the toilet.” When I asked whether a tube had gone down my throat because of the amount of throat pain I was having, the answer was only that “positive oxygen pressure” had been used. That felt evasive rather than transparent.
I was discharged with an oxygen saturation of 91%, despite ongoing breathing difficulty. We questioned whether that was an appropriate discharge point and were told it was not an issue. A spirometer was only provided after we explained how difficult it was for me to breathe, and the second anesthesiologist asked whether we had inhalers at home. Even with that, I was discharged with only standard instructions and no meaningful guidance specific to the airway event, possible aspiration concerns, home oxygen monitoring, warning signs, or expected jaw and throat pain from airway maneuvers.
My oxygen remained between 89% and 91% until the following morning. Fortunately, I had an albuterol inhaler at home. Without that, there is a real possibility I would have ended up in the ER later that day.
I am requesting a formal review of this case, including the airway event, the interventions used, my oxygen saturation trend in recovery, and the rationale for discharge at that time. I am also requesting copies of the anesthesia record, PACU/recovery record, oxygen saturation and vital sign trend, and documentation of the airway interventions performed, including whether jaw thrust, mask ventilation, oral airway, LMA, intubation, laryngospasm treatment, or aspiration assessment were involved.
My concern is patient safety, communication, and whether the discharge process was appropriate given the complication and my symptoms.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Love the attention to detail and the genuine care that each person of the medical staff has for their patients. Especially as a first time mama, navigating my labor and delivery journey was scary, but each person made sure I was educated in my options for me and baby and helped reassure me along the way. With a baby who went to the NICU the first few days of life, I was scared and grieving the loss of having my child so near to me, but the NICU nurses made me feel so confident in her care, that even though it was hard to leave my daughter at the hospital each time, I knew she was well taken care of.
Clean, well run facility with friendly, helpful staff. This was the best hospital experience I ever had.
Amazing patient care and a beautiful labor and delivery unit
Everyone was very polite!!
Kind and compassioet
I was pleasantly surprised by the kind staff. From the reception, pre-op, to the nurses. Everyone was professional but made an effort to be kind and helpful.
They were very welcoming and put you at ease.
The precert department was adamant that I owed $1300 for my procedure before services could be rendered. Registration was adamant even after I asked several times for them to talk to my insurance company whom I had already called 3 times and each representative with my insurance Credence BCBS told me the same thing I only owed $150 as a copay. No one would listen to me or call my insurance. After dealing with 7 people Susie from precert called me back and in fact told me I only owed what I stated $150. It was extremely upsetting that no one would listen to me. I’m a medical professional as well and felt that it was horrible that a patient should have to go through this and not be listened to. It made me think of how many other people/patients have had to go through this, not being listened to and having to pay more for surgical procedures than necessary or required.
The nurses and doctors were very kind and patient.
good communication and great attitude

Checking in was a breeze with Michelle- so cheery early in the morning and all of the nurses were so friendly and wonderful! Dr Whittaker was amazing and made me feel so safe and taken care of.
The gentleman that did the radiology for my CT was absolutely horrible. He told me that the doctor did not know what he was doing and was just wasting his time and my time and had decided to do all of these tests for no reason at all.
