Promptness
While I have an overall positive experience with Baylor Scott & White Frisco (rated 10/10), I feel compelled to address a concerning encounter I had with Dr. Vangala, the pediatrician who cared for my newborn son during our hospital stay.
I gave birth on February 2, 2025, at BSW Frisco. Throughout my pregnancy, my OBGYN, Dr. Catherine Holt (10/10), recommended that I continue my prescribed SSRI medication, which I have been taking for anxiety for 15 years. Dr. Holt informed me about the potential transient effects this medication might have on my newborn, which I had previously experienced with my first child. When my son was born, Dr. Holt observed his jitteriness and reassured me that this was a side effect of the SSRI.
However, when Dr. Vangala provided care for my son in the days following his birth, he informed me that the jitteriness was "not a normal side effect of the medication" and insisted on running tests "for drugs." This comment took me by surprise and left me deeply distressed. It felt accusatory, and I immediately became emotional after he left the room. Not only did I feel like a negligent mother for not identifying something was "wrong" with my newborn, but I was also falsely and hurtfully accused of drug use. I have never used illicit drugs in any form. I am a dedicated and responsible parent, particularly in the care of my children.
The comment made by Dr. Vangala was unprofessional, lacked empathy, and was particularly inappropriate given the vulnerability of being a postpartum mother. I would have appreciated a more respectful and compassionate approach—one that involved a clear explanation of the protocols for evaluating potential causes of my son's symptoms. Had Dr. Vangala taken a moment to review my medical history, perhaps consulted with my OBGYN, or simply engaged in a brief conversation with me, it would have been immediately clear that I am not a drug user. In fact, I delivered my baby without an epidural and declined hydrocodone following delivery, further demonstrating my commitment to my health and well-being.
After this interaction, I was visibly upset, and the managing nurse, provided much-needed comfort and reassurance. However, when I inquired with the pediatric nurses further about the tests being conducted on my son, I was met with uncertainty from the nursing staff, who were either unable or unwilling to provide clear information about exactly what was being tested for. This left me feeling uncomfortable and stigmatized for the remainder of my hospital stay, knowing I was being viewed as a potential drug user without any basis.
This unfortunate experience has left a lasting impact on me, and my son’s birth story will forever be marred by this traumatic encounter. I sincerely hope that the hospital and its staff take this feedback to heart and provide future patients with the respect, understanding, and empathy they deserve, particularly during such a vulnerable time.
