First and foremost for me is I love the classes that I attend and I love the instructors who teach those classes. This is the main reason I'm continuing at Genesis and the reason I would recommend Genesis to my friends. However, the part that makes it difficult to recommend has to do with facility upkeep. Yes, the A/C is fixed in the exercise area now, but this week the upper level and child care areas were extremely hot. The carpet is an embarrassment - how am I to recommend a place that looks so bad? The cloth chairs and couches are simply gross. Again, how can I recommend this to a friend? I don't use the showers - the last I used them they were like much of the rest of the facility, a little gross. I'm paying a premium for the amenities, but those amenities are becoming less and less important relative to the maintenance issues I see on a daily basis. I certainly hope my opinions will be considered.
equipment doesn't get fixed, shortage of free weights, broken down weight machines, cleaning supplies aren't always restocked for early morning hours, towels are extremely rough and scratch your face, women's locker room hasn't had air conditioning for over 3 weeks and never has hot showers.
lately the air quality is not good. Gym is unbearable - hot, humid, smelly, and main weight area is also hot and smelly (not quite as bad as the gym).
There's equipment padding that looks like it's been torn apart by racoons. I feel like that should be replaced considering we pay a fee for club maintenance. There's also an abundance of stained ceiling tiles, again, we pay club maintenance fees... ceiling tiles aren't expensive.
Keep lockers and equipment, pool etc in good repair
You let in a bunch of muscle meat heads from your other locations or whatever. Our gym was never like this in the prior 7 years.
More squat racks. Adjustable power racks.
Whirl pool doesn't work, Showers are sad shape, locker room A/C appears to not work. Someone keeps taking the chairs out of the mens locker rooms..
Lots of classes, great personal trainers, friendly staff- just a great place to work out!
Except for two random days, the whirlpool has been down for a month.
And about three or four showers are usable; some you can’t turn the handles, some you can’t adjust it from scalding temps, some have no shower head, some are constantly running hot water 24/7, and they’ve all been that way for multiple months. The tile above the showers looks like mold has been growing there for months.
Cleanliness, faster repairs, towels hooks in mens shower area broken and haven't been replances in over a year. ESPN channel in cardio area has been off for the last week.
I enjoy working out here, but the renovation project has been dragging on for far too long. It would be nice for more, colder water stations. Overall, the club continues to do a nice job.
Bathrooms are a mess. Set of sinks have not been working for months. When I ask the manager about them she tells me the faucets have been ordered. (They have them at Home Depot) showers are old and half don’t work. Locker room is dirty.
The condition of the men's locker room is poor and I will delay referral of friends until remodeling is done. Also the free weight racks are rusted and difficult to remove and replace weights that are used.
After close to 5 years of membership, I am regretfully leaving the club. I want to stress on 'regretfully' here, because I really did not want to leave, but the sheer lack of facility upkeep is what forced my hand. My quick final review:
Overall Club Offerings (facilities) - *****, overall I believe, the club has all the offerings anyone would want from a club. So no complains there.
People (Staff, front desk, etc.) - *****, great people, very helpful and very pleasant. I would however recommend bringing back name tags so that people can address staff by name and that will also help in calling out someone to management when they do a good job. I am not sure why this was discontinued.
Facility Upkeep - *, this is the one area that has been the BIGGEST disappointment. It became progressively bad when the club went from Praire Life to Genesis, with the WORST performance coming under Genesis Management. I would like to especially call out the men's locker room - it always stinks, stalls never have toilet paper, sink faucets leaking, basic liquids (soap, shampoo, etc.) not refilled and often empty, the steam and sauna working intermittently and the back breaker for me being the jacuzzi/hot tub jets not working for months. I was told by management that there is no appetite by current Genesis Leadership to even attempt to fix it.
The new membership staff are still showing around the club to new prospective members and talking about the jacuzzi as an asset when they know it has not been working for pretty much most of this year. That in my humble opinion is extremely unethical.
Overall, I still believe it is a great club and I hope to return someday if I hear the upkeep has improved.
There is an excessive amount of equipment that is broken and has not been repaired for weeks. Towels need to be replaced.
Re-tile ladies' showers.
I really enjoy the indoor and outdoor pool! I also love the line dancing and yoga classes.
Steam sauna, hot tub!
This facility is gross and dirty. Employees do not care about cleanliness whatsoever.
Friendly people
Very clean well kept weights where they belong
Needs a better offering of group fitness classes that come as a part of yearly dues.
Repairs seem to take a long time.
The classes and teachers are great!
Bathrooms are not very clean and not stocked. Things are broken for a prolonged period of time. Staff is not as friendly as they used to be.
Locker rooms are outdated and always need more cleaning.
Machines are outdated or broken for long periods of time
There is no urgency to fix the building. Examples would be hot water heater, leaky roof, heater in the winter, etc....
it is very clean
The place is badly in need of repairs. I was in yesterday, the roof was leaking, air conditioner system is spotty at best and machines are broke -- the place needs to to be updated.
I've been going to the Mills Civic gym for 13 years - so before you folks took over (Prairie LIfe, The Athletic Club). One of my favorite perks is the whirlpool in the men's showers. Over the years, this has had problems off and on, but it was always repaired - so we could enjoy using it. This time, after it (the jets) stopped working back in April(!), I was told there were "parts on order" to get it fixed. I just learned recently asking a staff member, that this whirlpool will NOT be fixed; that it will be left as is (like just sitting in a hot bathtub). I was very disappointed and very discouraged.
You guys are great! I always try to make sure that I wipe down the equipment after I use it. Had trouble this morning finding any towels.
