Squat racks are usually full. Also need more middle of the day pilates or barre classes.
Due to moving, my husband and I started going to the Ward Parkway location (we had memberships with OneLight for many years). The lack of equipment that was working properly or broken was baffling. The smell of mold or mildew was over powering, and the lack of cleaning was concerning. I’m not sure if the A.C. Unit was broken or just not turned on, making workouts almost unbearable during the summer heat. Definitely wouldn’t recommend Genesis to even my worst enemy.
The TVs don't work on the treadmills.
The TVs that on the wall are only tuned to sports or home improvement shows -- not even basic news.
The spray bottles and paper towels always seem to be out -- at 7 a.m.
And, there are attachments/equipment scattered all over.
I like the space and I like the people who workout in the a.m. but wish the gym was cleaner/picked up better and the treadmills had working TVs.

The club needs a deep cleaning.
The missing lights above the women’s locker jacuzzi are an eyesore.
Facilities are updated and clean. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Very nice variety of classes available.
The indoor and outdoor pools are fantastic when the chemicals are properly set.
I only participate in water aerobics. Historically long before you took ownership, we have struggled to have the "privilege" of quality equipment -- like we are the step children. Our belts are far from the best. We were promised new from other clubs when Genesis took ownership. Never happened. Was promised this spring we would receive equipment. Has yet to happen. Come clasps are broken and barely functional. Ladies have purchased their own belts -- others arrive early to get a decent belt..
Also pool water in the outdoor pool is not attended to regularly for proper chemicals so can have cloudy water. The previous pool manager (sorry, forgot his name) did an awesome job in recent years. Understand he may not be on staff anymore.
The indoor pool has not received the same attention of the rest of the club. The delayed maintenance includes need for painting, removal of out-of-date signage (like the rules -- that was old when I joined in 2000). Great to not have the blank electrical plates not have disgusting rusty screws (which would be a cheap easy repair). Is the indoor pool water really at static 84 degrees? Take down the signage no longer applicable. Would be great to have pool freshened up like the rest of the club has had. Would be nice to have the clock just north of the whirlpool back (if it hasn't recently returned.)
Can the exterior windows overlooking "north" pool be cleaned to all the smudges so the windows are really clean? Again -- they've been there for years.
Where do I start? During our recent visit: indoor pool closed, more than one treadmill not working/not working properly, an elliptical machine appeared out of order, many weight machines have badly cracked upholstery, many televisions are turned off or do not work and the televisions that are on? They are seriously old and have terrible picture quality. Only one overhead fan was turned on in the cardio area and the entire gym seemed stuffy and uncomfortably hot. The paper towels in the men's restroom (two different holders) were completely out of paper. We are forced to ask ourselves: what are we paying for??
A majority of the locker doors in the mens locker room are missing. The water pressure in the showers is terrible. Every week it seems the hot tub, wet sauna or dry sauna is out of order, charging for styrofoam cups is absurd, weights are old, many dumbbells require tightening before use. The list goes on and on. Compare this club to many other genesis clubs and tell tell me how it compares.
The Gen X classes
Pool
Pilates reformer sessions
There are never any new equipment. Most gyms in town have a hip thruster but instead the treadmills get updated. Which is also nice but it’s always the cardio equipment that gets updated. The water fountains are always so dirty it looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in years
My personal trainer and classes offered
1. Fix the showers in the men’s locker room that don’t work.
2. Fix the paper towel dispensers in the men’s locker room that don’t work.
3. Buy some more towels. Not fair for the staff to bear the brunt of complaints when no towels are available.
4. The center treadmill in the cardio area needs better stabilization. It jiggles too much.
Equipment, cleanliness, steam/sauna and my trainer, Chris Pudewa.
The equipment
The instructors. Barbara Ryan is the best!
I would like to see equipment that breaks repaired in a more timely manner. There are examples at the midtown location where cable equipment is down for several weeks. Also not enough caribiners for all cable machines. Would also like to see additional kettle bells with clearly marked weight and some heavier paired options (above 70lbs pairs).
I like the classes. The gym is pretty clean.
Love going to the pool after school has started
There is always equipment available
It is so clean and the staff is very friendly.
Dont fix the AC next time. Was nice in there for a couple weeks to be able to do more workout than warmup. It's a gym, not a hospital .
I like my trainer, Carissa.
It took several weeks to get the AC fixed in the group fitness room and the hot water back on.
I would like to see more fitness classes at merle hay. Maybe a power yoga, class or a morning Les Mills CORE class.
Locker room showers have mold on shower curtains and on the tiles. Upstairs workout area floors look like they are never mopped or vacuumed same with the indoor track. Paint chipped, roof air conditioning leaks with bucks continually catching the drips. Overall, not a very well maintained facility. You could do a lot better looking for improvements and cleanliness.
Excellent instructors for the classes. Excellent yoga class on Wednesday morning. Like the machines & treadmills Sometimes floor in class room is a little dirty. Appreciate the hand santiziers around the gym
Swimming pool and water aerobics class.
Love the body pump classes!
Equipment is good. People who work there are very friendly and helpful. Facilities are usually in good shape. I have found some clubs are not as well maintained as others.
Two thumbs up to my instructors for always providing top-notch classes and lots of encouragement. My instructors are TERRIFIC! Two thumbs up to Brenna for her smile and “hello” in the morning. Kudos to the young man who was upstairs late one afternoon wiping down equipment. Not an easy job and he frequently refreshed the towel he was using with additional sanitizing spray. Great to see!
I still hesitate to recommend the club due to some health and life safety concerns that I currently see in the building. These may be addressed soon as the remodeling project does not seem to have reached completion. Was pleased to see that work was being done on the fire alarm systems. I’m sure that as the remodeling continues, these things will be focused on and I will be more likely to recommend the club to my friends.
