This might sound weird, but one of my favorite parts of mountain biking is bringing my bike into the shop. It's fun to talk "shop" with Bob (he's my mechanic) - stories from the trail, philosophy on different riding styles, and how much fun it is to ride bike!
And...I know that when I bring my bike in, he is going to A)Do great work on it and B)Be extremely thorough with any problems I'm having as well as anything else he finds.
Last time in I brought 2 bikes with a lot of obvious problems and a lot of "hasn't been serviced in awhile and is way overdue" (you know the type) symptoms. Bob's response is typically "That's no problem, I'll take care of it for you" and every time I thank him, he thanks me right back for my business. It's a feel good transaction for sure.
So, after I got my bike back, I rode it today at Ski Hill and it was almost indistinguishable from how it felt before. A repaired stuck break piston (I didn't even realize it was stuck) meant the bike was suddenly faster. No more intermittent brake dragging, and they were way more responsive too. New pivot and headset bearings (I didn't realize how dirty and rough they were) meant the bike was silent, smooth, and incredibly planted throughout the whole suspension. It was like I was glued to the trail. It was one of the most fun rides I've had in a long time.
And then, peace of mind. I brought the bike in after realizing the creak I'd been unsuccessfully chasing down was a cracked frame. I was about to take it to Boyne Highlands downhill course and luckily found the frame crack beforehand. That would've been a bad day. So, knowing this, Bob was thorough and checking out everything on the bike to make sure it was functioning correctly and safely. I've learned my lesson - if something doesn't sound or feel or work properly - get it looked at so you can focus your attention on the trail and scenery and experience. Nothing on a bike is supposed to last forever - I'd rather be safe than sorry and have it regularly looked at by a pro like Bob.
Rockford Bike Shop is part of what makes mountain biking fun for me. I work on building skills and confidence and (unfortunately) endurance, and they work on making sure my bike can keep up with me! Plus, it's an awesome shop with awesome people. I'm always happy to go there on my way to or from the trails.
