We love the Salem Y. The staff are friendly and it feels like a community. The classes are very inclusive. Recently we stopped by during the snow storm (thanks for being open!) and the staff helped our kids get equipment out for free play in the gym. They were thrilled!
Salem YMCA open long hours; helpful staff too
Parking meters are pretty much the only option around the Salem Y. Finding a spot can be challenging. Then again, if you come early in the morning, things still look good, and it's free until 8:00 AM. Fortunately, parking is not an issue for me. With that said: The Salem Y is bigger on the inside than you might think from the outside. The pool is small, but I usually come in for the workout area. It is packed to make the most use of available space, and it offers the type of elliptical that agrees with me (movement feels natural). The Beverly Y, for example, has long done away with that specific type of elliptical, so I don't go there anymore for that.

We are very happy with Julia, the kids' swimming instructor, as well as the helpful, supportive, and fun environment that she and Alex create each Wednesday when we are there. Swim class is a highlight of our week. The kids have made incredible progress this season and gained so much confidence. Thank you!

The instructor, Ms. Jacqueline, is wonderful. There is a great balance of time with the instructor and time for the parents/caregivers to interact with the infants by themselves.

I like the coaches, I like that the water isn't as cold as Beverly... I like that we feel sort of at home there now... I like that the swim team is not "high pressure".
I am a huge fan of Eme's pilates classes. It is so helpful that these classes are outside of work hours (6:30pm on Monday and Thursday nights, and 8:15am on Saturdays). I wish there were more pilates and/or barre classes offered outside of work hours - I would love to go more than three times a week! And the classes are always fully booked, so there seems to be lots of interest from other folks, too!

The yoga program is excellent, and the sauna and steam rooms work well.
The building heat could use some improvement.
