Member Testimonials
I like the location, the staff and the scale of the Lakewood Y.
Very welcoming environment and really appreciated the short-term membership since we were renting in Durham for two weeks.
The studio is nice and the instructors are great. But I’d like more pilates or barre offerings in the mornings on weekdays. Or have Brianna’s pilates class twice a week!
I like all the Durham Ys but I think Lakewood is my favorite. Maybe because it's smaller so the atmosphere is more easygoing. I enjoy the strength training classes & use a few of the machines. If the weather is good I walk the track behind the building. The music playlist there is great!
Great facility
Fix steam room
My daughter enjoyed herself and gained new ways to embrace herself and stand up for herself
There is a wide variety of equipment to use, there is not a crowd of people there at the time that I go (middle of the day, on weekdays.) There is also assistance with using the equipment if I need it.
Zumba classes
Super friendly staff
Classes and the staff!
the front desk people are very friendly and made you feel welcomed.
Lakewood isn't my home YMCA, but I was in the area for something else, so I took a Zumba class with Lanae. She was excellent! A very clear instructor, and the vibe in the class was really fun. I would take this class again!
The locker facilities were also really clean, and the front desk person was really kind and helpful.
My son does the afterschool for ECA students at McMannen United Methodist Church--everyone there is wonderful and I appreciate how friendly everyone is...keep it up!
The community!
Great fitness & yoga instructors, very nice facilities & staff
Customer Service. Cleanliness. Availability of equipment. And the community.
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Equipment is clean!
issue; Ceiling fans should be cut on. They haven’t been on for a while. I’ve asked about them several times!
Enjoy the time I spend there!
Cheerful and professional staff! They go above and beyond to make the Y a pleasant and welcoming place to work out.
All good EXCEPT for the steam room. PLEASE KEEP IT WORKING.
And Please go back to pre-Covid hours on the weekend,
Ease of access, clean workroom, machines, and dressing room. Friendly and professional staff. Convenient location.
I like the Ymca for sports camps Camp Bull Run like the basketball camp I like the volleyball camp. They’re all really good. My daughter has done soccer and swimming there though Ymca has been the best place that we have ever really went in Durham and I’m very proud to say that we are part of the Ymca. I do wanna become a member so my daughter can go with me and work out on the treadmills and she is only 12 years old right now, but I did hear that she can still join and walk with me on the Treadmill if she does a tour at the Ymca, so that is something to look forward to. I am very happy.
Very friendly instructor! Class was a vibe. Everyone is so welcoming and it’s a judgement free zone! Been telling anyone who will listen how great it is
You offer onvenient pick up times and location & fun action-filled day for my active son!
I like the front desk people, particularly Dee and Shan. Dee makes me laugh every time and it brightens my day to see her.
The facility is pleasant and it is easy to focus. It is smaller than downtown -- less crowded and less noisy.
Great staff & love the multiple locations!
We’ve been at Lakewood the last 6 summers. It has always been pleasant and a fun time. We love the team and Taylor is amazing. She keeps us updated and is very attentive to “her babies”. I love that. We will see you all next summer. Keep up the great job. Have a great fall.
The check in process was easy. My son got a lot of physical activity. He came home happy and seemed to enjoy his camp experience.
Pleasant staff, comfortable, bright, clean facilities, equipment in good order, and comfortable locker room. I also like the yoga / exercise classroom here. I have had two wonderfully helpful interactions with staff when 1) my key card was dropped in the parking lot and 2) had to get a new card later because mine was so worn out. In the first instance I reported the loss but had to rush off. Within 45 minutes, the staff member left me a voicemail saying the key card had been returned. Some months later when my card (of 10+ years) was worn out and needed replacement, I asked about that when checking in for a locker and came out to find that a new one had been issued and placed on my keyring, ready to go. Everyone is just thoughtful, kind, efficient.
I had one early instance that was baffling--several months ago. I had signed up for an exercise orientation, arrived early, checked in, waited, and no one came. I spoke to the desk, and the person was somewhere in the building but never arrived. I never knew what happened. I just used the equipment with which I was familiar while I waited, then left. The desk staff apologized profusely. I imagine there might have been some emergency. I have since done mostly classes and the equipment with which I am familiar. I am almost 65, so I take care with the weights and equipment like that. I will revisit the orientation later. I can imagine that some emergency came up. Everyone there has always been excellent, so it is not a huge deal. WAs just a bit baffling.

Lori the instructor is great. However parking at this location is not good. a lot of people not going to the gym take all the parking spots which is very unfair for people trying to use the gym and have to find parking somewhere else.
