Recommendation & Feedback for the YMCA
I want to start by saying that I genuinely love the YMCA and believe in its mission. I talk about the Y and recommend it every chance I get. I am also someone who would love to be more involved in helping promote the Y and be part of a promotion or community outreach committee because I believe there is so much potential here.
One of the things that keeps me coming back is the Group Exercise instructors. They make a real difference in my experience and are a huge reason I feel encouraged to stay active.
I especially want to recognize:
* Monday Body Pump with Cait – she brings great energy and encouragement.
* Wednesday Strength & Tone with Jane – her classes keep me motivated and coming back.
* Thursday and Saturday Hip Hop Step with Tracey – this is my favorite class! Tracey makes exercise fun, energetic, and something I genuinely look forward to.
These instructors are an asset to the Y, and I want leadership to know that their efforts are noticed and appreciated.
At the same time, I believe the YMCA can do better. I am saying that because I care about the Y and want to be able to recommend it proudly.
Community Presence & Promotion
I think the Y has an opportunity to do much more advertising and community outreach. I remember previous years when there were outdoor classes, weekend pop-up classes, and activities that created excitement and brought people into the Y. I would love to see more of that again.
It is currently Welcome Week, and I have received essentially one email mentioning it—and even that email seemed primarily focused on an auction. Where is the excitement? Where is the invitation for members and the community to come see what the Y has to offer?
And I have to ask: Why do we only have one Group Exercise class on Saturday? Saturday is an opportunity to attract members, families, guests, and people who work during the week. I think the schedule could be much stronger.
Leadership & Staff Training
I also believe there needs to be stronger leadership presence and better staff training for unexpected situations.
For example, when a little girl was injured, it took approximately 30 minutes to locate the first-aid kit, and no one came to console or appropriately check on her during that time. The manager did not even make an appearance.
Situations like that are concerning. I understand that unexpected things happen, but staff should be trained and prepared to respond appropriately when they do. Everyone working in the building should know where basic emergency supplies are located, what steps to take, and who is responsible for responding.
These are the kinds of experiences that make it difficult for me to recommend the Y as enthusiastically as I would like to.
The Little Things Matter
I also have to mention the condition of the studio floor. Why was the studio floor so filthy when guests were in the building?
Cleanliness and presentation matter, especially when you are welcoming potential members and guests. Those small details can make a big difference in how people perceive the organization.
I Believe in the Y
I want to emphasize that none of this changes the fact that I believe in the mission of the YMCA and will continue to support it.
I am not looking for perfection. I am looking for an organization that lives up to the mission it promotes.
I talk about the Y. I encourage people to join. I participate. I show up. I support the instructors. I want to see the Y succeed.
That is exactly why I am willing to say when I think there are opportunities for improvement.
Please know that there are members who care deeply about this organization and want to help it grow. I would love to see stronger community outreach, better promotion, more engaging programming, stronger staff preparation, visible leadership, and greater attention to the member and guest experience.
The Y has good people, great instructors, and a mission worth supporting.
The city of Clinton needs the Sampson County YMCA.
But you can do better. And I believe you can.
