I like everything about it...it's a verrrry nice place.
I primarily use the workout room. Although it has numerous machines and free hand weights, I would like to see a second rack for those interested in squats, deadlifts, bench press and overhead press. Those exercises have been shown to be the most comprehensive exercises for any age because they stress the entire body - increasing bone density, improving insulin sensitivity and other cellular improvements in addition to strengthening muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They are also very functional exercises in that all of us need to stand, lift things from the ground, push things overhead, and so forth. I would also like to see 1.25 pounds as the smallest weight to add to a bar instead of 2.5 pounds for those of us getting up in years, and even a second bar that is maybe 33 pounds or less, instead of only the 45 pound bar.
I also enjoy swimming laps in the recreational pool because of the warm water. The other indoor pool is too cold and the outdoor pool is... well, outdoors, and I am limited to indoor swimming because of precancerous skin conditions.
Everyone who works at the Y is so helpful and friendly. When I go to dance class in the morning I always get a welcoming greeting, I look forward to seeing a welcoming smiling face.
Our dance instructor is Zamara and she is the best, our class is usually full, it is such a good class, I am 83 and this class is so good for your memory, you have to remember the steps, the routine the steps are going to be in when you dance and the music gets you going,. I lost 50 lbs. and needed an exercise class this class was perfect because I love to dance and I knew I would stay with it, that was almost 14 yrs. ago.
Classes are all day long
The Y needs to do more to get water aerobics instructors. We love Toni on Wednesday and Fridays but need an energetic teacher for Monday. We loved Tonya when she was a sub. We also loved Bev. Some of the people in class just cannot stop talking. It is rude to the instructors plus the other attendees that don't want to listen to everything that goes on in their present and past lives.
I like the community feel that each program has and it makes it easy to get to know people. I like the professional aspect of the leaders and their wanted to help each one reach whatever goal they have set for themselves. I like the way the members who come at 5;00 AM have built a ‘family’ and watch out for each other when someone is missing and/or encouraging one another and/or helping each other with needs outside of the YMCA.

The Silver Sneaker is a great acknowledge of our elderly and gives us a fantastic opportunity to not only exercise but meet and greet others.
We love to utilize the pool. Not only has it allowed us to us it for homeschooling, recreation, swim lessons, and the recovery of my knee but it's also been well priced for my daughter and I. And that I thank you for along with all the great things you have provided us with!

Many different activities and friendly staff
When I was eligible for Silver Sneakers, I attended another YMCA. I tread water and do water exercises because it is easier on my joints and body. (I have a couple of old injuries). That pool was wonderful the first year I went there. Then new leadership took over, and turned down the temperature of the pool and I would go home and could not get my core warm. I noticed several seniors left, and I was dreading to go myself. So I made the choice to try the Highland YMCA. A choice I am so happy I made, for many reasons. The number one reason is the temperature of the water in the pool. It is wonderful for seniors. I look forward to going on cold days because I know it will be a great experience. i do get a few laps in on the walking track as well before I leave the YMCA.
The facility is beautiful. It is very clean as well. Although, I do not participate in classes, I hear many talk about how much they enjoy them. When I was younger, I would have loved the classes.
The staff may be the biggest asset for the YMCA. They are friendly, make people feel welcome, and accommodating. Thanks to the Highland YMCA, I am looking forward to the next few months of keeping myself moving during these cold months.
All personnel are kind and welcoming and knowledgeable. If I ever had a question, it has been answered and lead me down the right path. I must mention Holly. our Solver Sneakers instructor. She is always prepared and appears to truly enjoy adding some variety to each class. Thank you Y for helping me be healthier and happier.
