Plenty of choices.
I use the Wellness Center, which is well-managed, primarily by Ruth. I like the orderliness of it and the maintenance of the equipment. Ruth seems to be particular about cleanliness, and I sometimes see her going around with a broom and dustpan. She makes sure that rules are being followed, and this helps bring about the orderliness -- and relative calm -- of the center.
I also use the pool, which is well-maintained. The water chemistry is consistently what it should be, and the clarity is good, which stands in stark contrast to the pool of a Y branch not far. The DDY guards are doing a far better job with consistent attentiveness than ever before in my ten years of swimming here. They're following the guard rules far more often than before. Which is essential, imperative, for safety, especially of small children.
It's also important for the so-called optics. Parents whose kids are in swim lessons are watching from the lobby or the pool deck. They note what's going on, including whether the guards are following the rules, including the one about not staring at one's cell phone, or the one about not gabbing interminably with a friend. Parents are always watching. Members are.
I'm hoping the Y -- beginning with executives at Metro -- continues to think about improving the guarding, which is a difficult job, mostly for its long shifts and tediousness. Can the guards be given more breaks? Longer ones? Can they be paid more? What can be done to help them with this job, again not an easy one.
The QR scan sheet for guard behavior should be removed from the pool deck and placed in the lobby, perhaps on the bulletin board by the comment box. This would make far more sense.
Finally, when I leave a comment -- and I have rarely done so -- and indicate that I'd like someone to call me, I would appreciate someone's actually doing that.
Clean, variety, kind staff, close by!
