In the classes I’ve taken the instructors work with everyone at the individual clients’s physical level. The person chooses their weight levels and moves to their ability. The individual builds up slowly as they feel comfortable.
Classes
We moved to RO from Detroit 10 years ago. The metropolitan Detroit Y was a mainstay for our family while living downtown. From pre-k to Zumba lessons and birthday parties it was our “basement, backyard, and family room”. Naturally we wanted to bring this connection and community with us to Royal Oak.
The 11mile Y had not had a facelift it seemed since its original construction. The ladies restroom took me right back to my elementary school. In many ways that was a loving and joyful experience. Group classes are my wheelhouse. The small group rooms in 11 mile left me feeling claustrophobic and wondering if there would be enough oxygen for everyone. A bit dramatic ….and the playhouse at the det met Y was fantastic but I digress.
Comparison is the thief of joy so we try not to do that. Rather find something positive to focus on and make the best of what you’ve got. Gratefully unsatisfied.
So we fell out of community w the 11mile Y. Our daughter continues her relationship w the Y via her ongoing camping and leadership journey at Camp Ohiyesa.
Recently we decided to rejoin so Stella could do some cardio and weight training for lacrosse this winter.
WOW- I see you 11 mile 🤩. Well done. You’re fully dressed with a smile! You not only see the improvements everywhere you look but you can feel that the staff are even rejuvenated as well.

The classes offered and the people who attend the classes
I enjoy the pool, the gym facilities, the sauna, and the locker room is clean and spacious.
Also, the staff is incredibly friendly.
I've only been to one class and used the gym, but I like the atmosphere.
I had a back injury last year and fell on the ice in my carport, landing on my
back. I have had physical therapy, but when I discovered I could take these
classes through Silver Sneakers, it seems to be more lively to be with a
group of people.

I just moved to Southfield from a senior community where exercise was provided at least 3 times a week. I now have to drive approximately 5 or 6 miles but it's worth it because the instructors are very good and the people are friendly, and the facility is very clean. I'm so glad I found Silver Sneaker classes nearby. They help me to keep a similar routine. Thanks Medicare for providing the benefit and thanks to South Oakland YMCA for providing the classes.
So far, I like the equipment on the balcony, but I hope to take a class.

I use the Wellness Ctr the most and always find plenty of personal challenge using the machines and weights it offers.
