The staff is great
The Nir Family YMCA offers everything I need under one roof. Could not ask for more.
About me:
Male (78), Disabled (partial leg paralysis—require use of a Cane), heart disease (CAD & AFIB), chronic/acute back pain (3 Lumbar Fusion Surgeries).
On top of the above challenges, in March ending of 2023, I had knee replacement surgery on my non-paralyzed leg. Due to the importance of this leg in conducting my life—it being called upon to carry the load for my mobility—I decided it prudent to try to build upon my post-surgery Physical Therapy experience. It was clear that more work was needed to be done .So, with my Insurance Carrier (United Healthcare) providing the benefit of free membership to the YMCA, in mid-June I joined.
What a truly impactful decision!
With the great help of early morning Wellness Coaches Dave & John( both no longer there) , both in introducing equipment and encouragement, I settled into a routine with a simple , overarching goal—workout more days than not, every single month.
Using just two of the multitude of equipment resources available—rowing and recumbent elliptical—while steadfastly sticking to my goal, the workouts lengthened and the efficiency grew.
With the first quarter of this year now in the books, 68 of 91 days available (74.7%) I made my way to the “Y”, averaging 1.1 hours of actual workout time per visit. My knee feels totally normal again. My Cardiologist is ecstatic with the regimen and has encouraged me not to change a thing in the workouts, as the anaerobic benefits from the use of above equipment greatly counters my particular heart disease .
There’s so much more that could be written as to how thankful I am for this organization. Already, this response to your survey is much too long. I apologize. But perhaps this one last vignette:
Did you know that there are 19 steps from the Ground to 2nd floor in the YMCA building? When I first began my attendance, I had to take the elevator. As time went by and my leg strengthened, I began using the stairs as part of my workout , but required great caution and holding onto the stair railing all of the climb up, as poor balance is a side effect of the lumbar induced paralysis.
Well… now I begin every workout by making the 19 step climb with my cane tucked under my arm and not holding onto the rail at all. Humble sounding achievement? Perhaps. But one of many things I have learned at the “Y” is to disregard my pre-disability markers of performance and measure success in my new world accordingly .
So many of these climbs, the above mentioned Coaches would happen to be at the top of the stairs and literally cheer me on.
Literally. Cheer!
With all of the associated mental and physical challenges associated with coping with disabilities, how does one put a price tag upon the value of positive human interaction? From the EVERY morning cheery greeting at the front desk by Mona, to cheering coaches at the top of the stairs, this YMCA has provided not just the equipment to work upon my health’s improvement, but the people as well.
I am so ever thankful!
My best regards, Michael Denninger
Lots of claaases to choose from, and two indoor pools! Good value for the money.
The Nir YMCA offers a wide variety of programs and classes to help people get into good medical/physical shape and/or stay in shape. In addition this YMCA is active in outreach to the Wilmington community with children's and family programs and events that foster good social relationships and community growth and togetherness.
My husband and I use the pool for deep water core aerobics on a very regular basis.
Wish there could be a few more times and options of class types.
Everyone is friendly the areas are clean equipment is usually available
This is a good facility with kind people!
The staff is friendly, responsive and knowledgeable. Of the 6 gyms that aI have attended this is by far the best. Wonderful and broad offering of classes with excellent instructors are exceptional.
This is my place of peace! Love the Y! It has been such a wonderful escape and stress reliever for me and my kids! We look forward to our days at the Y!
How do I like the Nir Family YMCA? Let me count the ways!
(1) Volume and variety. There is literally a class for everyone. I usually go to the Y 4 to 5 days a week, and there's a different class I love each day. Plus, my husband and I have been getting into Pickle Ball, and there are beginner classes several times a week.
(2) Personable people. From the front desk to the instructors, everyone is warm and welcoming.
(3) Diverse members. I love meeting new people of all ages and backgrounds.
(4) Childcare. This doesn't apply to me anymore, as my daughter is grown. But it was a huge help when she was little.
(5) Extras like the pool, sauna, locker room. I don't use them, but it's great that they're there.
(6) Value. We pay a family membership fee that's reasonable and so worth it for all we get.
I've been a member the whole time we've lived in Wilmington, which is 19 years now. It's been one of the reasons I love this town so much.
The classes and friendly staff and instructors
I love all the classes and the community feel the Y has. I love that involves kids and adults alike.
Very wheelchair accessible
The staff is terrific and the facilities are always very clean!
I love the Y and the fun atmosphere and supportive people who work there. Gordon and Susan are my favorite instructors. One thing I would like to ask if possible is if there could be 20 lb dumbbells put in Studio A, currently the 15 lbs are good but sometimes you want a little more weight on certain exercises. Thank you!
Welcoming staff and a great environment to exercise and meet other people.
Such a great place to get moving and to try new activities. Staff is so welcoming and helpful.
The special health classes, pickleball, new offerings.
The people are the best
Very friendly and helpful staff. Very good facilities that include both lap pool and water aerobics pool, extensive wgt/exercise machine room, Very large gym for basket ball or children's programs, racketball courts. The Y has extended hours so that nearly anyone can find time in their schedule for exercise. There are a wide range of programs to suit nearly any interest. Also, I know there is some kind of morning pre-school children’s program that the kids seem to love—making new friends and plating with each other. We are fortunate to have such a facility in Wilmington
The staff members are friendly and competent. There is a variety of exercise classes which I shall participate in if I can't swim in the family pool lane. The Family Pool has a lane that allows people like myself to swim as well as jog/walk/exercise.
Everything: happy, helpful staff, meeting new friends, easy scheduling system, acceptance of all.
It’s clean and friendly
Family orientated

The variety of classes that I want to take, especially in the late morning which is my preferred time for them.

Pretty much everything, starting with Mona’s big smile of greeting every morning.
The variety of classes offered and times
The friendly kind staff members.

I love the variety of classes
