The Y offers great programs for people of all ages. I am specifically happy about the choices for people over 65, my age group when I joined.
They have classes at all levels of activity.
I participate in the Water Exercise classes as well as the bone density classes. All the instructors are very knowledgeable and fun to be with.
I also enjoy just being able to show up and use the treadmill or weights.
We’re lucky to have a community YMCA!

Rubens, Rubens, Rubens!!!! Rubens Tuesday and Thursday water exercise class is the best! Great workout, fun class, wonderful people and Rubens is the best! He combines this great workout with a lot of fun and humor and pep! Rubens provides excellent instruction with a great variety of exercises and stretches that target the whole body in a gentle yet productive way. He makes sure we are listening to our bodies but most of all, he makes sure we are paying attention and having fun. This class is for adults of all ages and is friendly for those of us with special physical challenges. Rubens makes sure to incorporate stretches and breathing at the end of each class. Rubens keeps us coming back and not.only runs this class like a well oiled machine, but runs the pool that way as well! A special shout out to Kate! She is super friendly and keeps us all safe. We are confident in her and she exudes professionalism while always having a smile for us. All of the guards at the y are top notch and Kate is the cream of the crop! The front desk staff is beyond helpful and exceptionally competent. Friendly and they really know their stuff! Thanks Melrose Family Ymca for providing a safe and healthy environment for all in the community! And thanks to Rubens for continuing to make class fun, safe, energetic and a great workout!
I only use the fitness center. I like the moving stairs. I call it the guantlet. The equipment is fine. I like the room where you can do floor exercises.

Some classes fill up quickly. For me, as a 63 year old woman who needs to keep bone density up, it would be good to have more classes like Courtney's strength class (which I have never actually been able to attend since it fills up so fast). So classes focussed on free weights squats etc. They could be 45 minutes - but focused on the lifting. I know you have special session classes that focus on this, but adding some 45 minute classes to the groupex schedule to address this same need would be great. Overall very happy though. Ah - one other thought. Personally I like the traditional yoga flow as taught by Jeff on Thursdays. More flows like that would be good too. Thanks!
Personal training department is great!
Absolutely loved the classes! I exclusively used the Y for the classes they offered and they were a full body workout. From fitness circuit to boxing to barre, there was a great mix of everything. All the instructors were incredible. Highly recommend.
So far, I have only been to Michelle Heron’s yoga class which I like very much.
All staff have been very helpful.
I really like the variety of group exercise programs geared to seniors. Also the remodeled workout area is great. I also like the pickleball league for women over 50 at Saugus. The staff and group leaders are very nice, too! It’s an important part of my life in Melrose.
Hours of operation are convenient. Equipment is good. Staff are welcoming.
My daughter is very shy and takes swimming lessons, and the instructor is very kind and patient, bringing comfort and security to my daughter.
