The peaceful work out atmosphere
I like that the gym/weights section is never crazy busy at all times of the day. When I worked out at Crunch, it was always too busy.
I love the community and diversity the Y has to offer. While the lifeguards do their absolute best, we still have kids that come play in the lap lanes. I'm unsure of an extra way to deter it but something to ponder.
Please know you have some great lifeguards at North KC. They actually care and do everything they can to keep children from getting hurt.
It is very clean and has lots of options for workouts.
It's right across the street from where I live and I get a discount. The staff are very friendly. Me and my granddaughter love going swimming there and using the workout equipment.
The genuine friendliness of the staff and most of the people who go there regularly. The quality of the facilities. The hours it is open.
I love the monthly painting classes, book club and other activities that give us the opportunity to connect and make new friends! Senior fitness is my favorite class and the core class is equally important. The workout equipment in the gym is wonderfully maintained. Looking forward to a visit from my granddaughter so we can check out that great pool and slide!
Pool managers patiently and thoroughly explain rules, facility accessibility, etc.
Clerk with whom I applied for membership was clear with all aspects of billing, etc.
Friendliness of staff. Cleanliness. Well maintained equipment.
The friendly staff
Easy to park. Clean facilities and friendly staff
I absolutely love the swimming facility at the North Kansas City YMCA! The Lazy River is my favorite and I only wish that my home YMCA (Cleaver) had something similar. Although I live just a few minutes away from the Cleaver Y, I try to make it up North to attend the Aqua River Challenge with Jody when I have time. Jody is an amazing Instructor and it's obvious how much planning and effort she puts into each class she teaches. While I really enjoyed the class when Angela was teaching the Aqua River Challenge, Jody is incredible and I look forward to attending more of her classes. Many thanks for providing such a wonderful Instructor and for your beautiful facility that is the NKC YMCA!
The hours of availability and the instructors
The new weight equipment is great. It would be nice to have lower mirrors in front of the new squat racks so I can better monitor my form.
Among the many outstanding benefits of the Y is the wonderful front desk ptofessionals!!

I really like the equipment at this YMCA, and the facility is consistently clean. My main issue has been with the customer service at the front desk. This does not apply to every employee, but I have had several interactions where the staff seemed dismissive, rushed, or unnecessarily rude. I think there needs to be more emphasis on clearly communicating information to members.
For example, I recently asked the front desk about bringing my wife in using my membership’s guest benefit and purchasing day passes for my two young children so we could use the pool together. I was told that would be no problem.
The following day, we arrived around 4 PM fully prepared to spend the afternoon at the pool. I came in expecting to purchase the day passes, only to be told that day passes could no longer be purchased after 3 PM. I completely understand that policies are policies, but nobody had mentioned this restriction when I specifically asked about the process the day before.
What bothered me even more was the way the information was communicated. The employee’s tone came across as very passive-aggressive, and we were essentially told to drive to another YMCA and see if they would let us in. The interaction was frustrating enough that I seriously considered canceling my membership.
We tried again the following day and arrived around 2 PM so we could purchase the day passes and complete my wife’s guest paperwork. After doing everything we had been told to do, we were then informed that the pool would not be available until 4 PM.
I understand that schedules change and policies exist, but all of these unnecessary trips and frustrations could have been avoided with better communication from the beginning. We were simply trying to spend one afternoon—really just an hour or so—at the pool together as a family.
This was especially disappointing because I had been trying to convince my wife that we should upgrade to a family membership so we could all start coming regularly. Instead, the experience left both of us frustrated. Not only did the YMCA potentially lose a family membership because of poor customer service, but it also left a longtime member feeling extremely dissatisfied.
The facility itself is great. I just wish the level of customer service at the front desk consistently matched the quality of the gym.
