Personal plan, goal setting, works with schedule. Staff is great. Most of all our daughter loves it...loves the teachers... and I have seen most (if not all) staff go out of there way to know her and acknowledge her and make her feel like she belongs there which helps her to succeed.
It's just reaLly expensive.
Im not sure yet, as my son has only been going to Sylvan for about a month and a half. So, I have yet to see how Sylvan performs.
I like the flexibility of accommodating study times, especially when the unexpected occurs. My granddaughter is very comfortable in the new environment and actually looks forward to going to Sylvan. I am satisfied that she considers this a "support resource" for her school work.
The people in the offices are friendly and they try to accommodate the needs of the family and students.

Tutoring lessons are offered on weekends as well as later evenings times during the week.
From the first day I walked in the inquire about tutoring services for my grandson, I was extremely pleased with Allyson's professionalism and welcoming spirit. my grandson has only attended a few sessions but already I have noticed his self esteem has gone up. I think that the ipad is a great tool, but don't feel it is right for all learning styles. It would be a great idea to add multi-sensory teaching back to the teaching.
Wide variety of times open to service my child.
1:3 or even 1:2 ratio of teacher to student. Convenient location. Caring instructors. The program helped all of our children make it into a private school!
Keep better track of where your students are. Knowing the individual's current academic status in school.
I wasn't aware that under new management my child's progress wasn't being monitored as it had been previously. I was very upset and to find that I was paying for remedial Algebra lessons for my child because as I was told, the Sylvan Algebra course wasn't completed. This is after receiving an A in a on-line Honors College Algebra class and with the final test being taken and proctored at your location. Previously, the owner & management knew my child, was encouraging, and was well aware that attending Sylvan was not for remedial work but to keep the intellect stimulated because of boredom at school. So, ghastly I've been paying for private school stagnation and then worse yet, backwards regression at Sylvan. (Sylvan was still teaching Algebra, after receiving an A in the course and the child now well into Geometry.) I wasn't aware / notified that Sylvan was no longer following my child's progress nor keeping him at higher level of academic stimulation for which was the intent of going to Sylvan.
There were a few teachers previously who would stimulate curiosity and engage in intellectual conversations. Recently, classes only involved doing "sheet work", not really being "taught" any concepts but only given more problems to work on to drill topics in. This falls more in line with Kumon and why I didn't choose them. I've been expounding on the concept to parents, friends and other teachers that Sylvan was better, specifically because of the one-on-one tutoring and direct teaching interaction with the students
I've always credited Sylvan for keeping my child well advanced academically and for scoring beyond grade level on national tests, including the SAT in 8th grade. Being fortunate because of these scores, invited and to have participated in G & T programs and taken classes at various universities.
We are very thankful for Sylvan, and especially to Mr. Joe for our child's previous success. We would like to keep this relationship and hope the level of standards and continued cognitive stimulation to continue. Please keep closer mentoring on your students and fully understand why they are going to Sylvan. Please realize what makes Sylvan a great tutoring service are the teachers. Know that all students can benefit from tutoring but most importantly tutoring is NOT just for remedial work. There are so many young minds who just love learning and are omnivores for knowledge. Be aware that this might be the reason why they are going to Sylvan! Thank you. We are grateful for your teachers!
My son loves going to Sylvan's. I see a very positive change in his attitude regarding his math. Which makes me very very happy.
Need to insist on reading requirement at home. Prescribed book and portions of it between classes should be a must. Kids are very reluctant to read
On their own-- with all the distraction from video games and such devices. They must be taught the beauty of getting into a captivating story in print. Magazines if not books! Name removed Nirula , father of Laurence Nirula
Very accommodating, very friendly and my daughter seemed to enjoy tutoring and advanced in her reading during the summer sessions.
Organized, personable, sincere commitment to helping students excel.
One drawback -- while some tutors were excellent and engaging, others were not attentive which was frustrating.
In my opinion, I felt that I was paying too much money to have my daughter be tutored areas of Math that really wasn't exactly what she needed help in. I understand that your tutoring system requires the student to start from the basics and build on from there, but honestly it felt more like I was paying for what she already knew. Furthermore, I thought she was going to receive tutoring on the areas she needed work on and struggling with.
So my answer is "NO". Unfortunately, I will not recommend Sylvan to anyone. Sorry.
My daughter Kelsi has been going to Sylvan for years now and it really shows in her school work. She has done very well in her math and would probably do better if she had not missed so many scheduled appointments, which Sylvan has accomodated us graciously.
