i've referred about 6 friends that have joined the gym - the referral program benefits is good
get access to really nice gyms/machines - i would travel to different locations for this (e.g. newtown even though marrickville is closest to me for better equipment)

i wish we had more gyms in the south though (rockdale/arncliffe/bexley/hurstville area) - i have a bunch of friends living there and 20 mins is the maximum they'd travel to go to a gym
