The staff is very friendly and helpful, creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed and part of a close community or family. Having been a continuous member for well over 30 years, I love the South Valley YMCA!
I am handicapped and so am unsteady on my feet. I have hip and knee issues.
I went to the YMCA on White Road and it was a long way from the dressing room to the pool and a. long way into the water with not much of a place to hang on to. and with the kids hanging on the ropes,, it is hard to get through. In the dressing room there were women who took the handicap bathrooms to talk on the phone or dress and others who took the handicapped shower to do all their shaving and spa . This happen every time, not just once in a while. Also the showers have puddles of soapscum and hair and no soap in the dispensers. I will wait for the handicapped facilities because I have taken falls before and so I need the rails. So I usually stand and wait from 20 mins to sometims 45 mins to get a handicapped shower. So I stopped coming to the Y as often. But then,
YAH. THEY CLOSED THEIR POOL SO I HAD TO GO OUT TO SANTA TERESA POOL.
SO I HAVE SO MANY GOOD THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THE SOUTH VALLEY YMCA.
First off, the handicapped parking is right in the front so you dont have to walk through the parking lot and there is a ramp right there so if its one of those days where its painful to lift a leg up on to the step,, it is not a problem. Second, the front desk guy was helpful and friendly and addressed my questions before giving his attention to the next person walking up. Third, there are steps to get into the pool with handrails(that even have padding so not to slip) and the handrails are a safe distance so if you need to use both to get up and out or into the pool you feel safe. The pool is clean and the area is not cluttered with peoples belongings. The lifeguards are on duty. the ones I saw this week did not get on their phones or talk to other people while on duty. Next when going to the dressing room, there is handicap button to open the door,, I walk with a cane so this is major helpful. and, there is a nonslip mat along the corridor and in the dressing room. the handicap stall door is wonky,, but the showers on the wall all have a handrail to hold on to in order to get a safe shower. the only thing I would suggest there is that the hooks to hang stuff, like a bag or swimsuit is kinda high and so it its a stretch to reach,, but not too bad. The dressing room again,, has matts so you dont fall. It is clean,, and there are two stalls in the bathroom if needed. OVERALL I feel safe in this facility. I have only began coming this week,, but already I feel the difference in my overall wellbeing.
Thank you to all the staff and facilites personnel that have put the attention and effort into making this a handicapped accessible space that also can be used by the ladies with babies and small children and the techies who just come for a midday workout before getting back to the keyboard.
Much appreciated.
