I had called my vet, in tears, because I could not get my four cats (two of whom had always been outside) in carriers for the appointment that would free the outside cats of fleas and mites and any possibility of getting rabies, and protect the other two inside cats from becoming infested. Everybody needed shots. The vet said all his employees there were way too busy to help, and to call back when I got them in the carriers. Good-bye.
My husband, who had recently died, had always managed the carriers. I couldn't in my wildest dreams. I had only been able to get the two outside cats in because of the cold snap which brought horrible cold and freezing winds to Augusta that froze pipes and killed susceptible vegetation, so they wanted to come in, but with them came the fleas. I couldn't let the outside cats back out when it warmed up, because I could never get them again, and because a vicious stray had recently started terrorizing them outside, so essentially they had to become indoor cats. (And no, Animal Control would not come to take the stray away.) I tried putting on flea meds myself, but the cats resisted, A lot. So, no go.
And then I found out about Fetch! Somehow! Serendipitously.
I signed up for the service over the phone, easily, and then Nikki McFadden called me, and essentially changed my life.
It would be no problem at all, she said, to come and get the cats in carriers and take them to the vet's. It would be absolutely no problem to get them back home. And do you know what, it wasn't. She had them all in carriers in ten or fifteen minutes, and we were at the vet's in another ten. I had them boarded so the exterminators could rid the house of fleas and forty-eight hours later, we were all back home in a flea free environment and all safe. A miracle!
Nikki McFadden, the owner of Fetch, is just the person you want to show up when things are most awfully confusing and seem the bleakest. I had never heard of her, knew nothing about Fetch, and signed on in hope of a "wing and a prayer." And what I got was the kindest, most serious professional care, delivered with understated good humor and warmth, and with unlimited patience.
Now, I do not worry that I will not be able to take care of my cats when they need to get to the vet's. I know that if I need Nikki's help she will be there for all of us. And that is a wonderful feeling. Actually, the best feeling in the world.
