Background: This summer our teen son went to Huntington Learning Center to get a head start on Algebra II. He was not struggling in math, but we felt that this would give him something to do this summer (other than gaming).
As one might imagine, he was not too excited about spending 4 hours every week in tutoring. He was also not thrilled about the 25 minutes to walk there and walk back in 105-degree weather.
Nonetheless, we insisted that he go and learn some basic concepts in preparation for the upcoming school year as a freshman.
Hypothesis: As a competitive athlete, his rigorous training - combined with a full course load might overwhelm him - so this preemptive math tutoring at Huntington might make it a little bit easier to manage during the fall school term.
Methodology/Investment: For study material, we obtained a copy of the exact math textbook that he would be using in the upcoming school year. He had 2 sessions per week at Huntington. Each session was 2 hours long. He had private (one-on-one) sessions. He rarely did any homework. We spent well over $1,000 over the summer for these services.
Results: Not only did he learn all the concepts in the textbook, but they also had enough time to go back and do a cursory review of the chapters to make sure that it all sunk in. As the summer progressed we noticed that he began to look forward to his math lesson. He began to make it a point to get ready and show up on time. We even gave him the option to skip the last week, but he insisted on going. Much to our delight, he began to love math and (on his own accord) started using spreadsheets to calculate basketball and football score statistics and win predictions. His eyes light up when he explains bell-shaped histograms!
Fast forward to today, these summer math lessons are over and yesterday he attended his first day of high school.
We are beyond satisfied with the results achieved through Huntington Learning Center! The return on this investment has been much more than we expected:
* He loves math
* If soccer doesn't work out, then he can fall back on math (or pursue both!)
* He has more confidence going into the school year
* The large amount of material covered over the summer was unexpected
* He hopes to take statistics next summer with the same tutor

We liked presentation what center can offer in preparing our child for SAT exam. We liked to hear about different ways of study engagement including in person, on line and individual work. All that sounds good. We will be eager to see results of this program for our child.

We will be returning this year for 6th they are patient and communicate well about what my child needs and where she needs more time with her learning on certain things.
